My Dear Acyutananda,
Please accept my blessings. I beg to acknowledge receipt of your letter dated 10 March, 1970.
I understand that there was some press interview, and in future also whenever there is press interview, you can remember the following points, which will help you to make a clear understanding of our Krishna Consciousness movement.
Try to convince in the meeting that the difference between animal society and human society is that the human society has in some form the ideals of Krishna Consciousness or God Consciousness. That is religion. Religion without God Consciousness has no meaning. And God Consciousness means that we are eternally related with Him. He is the Father, and everyone of us is the part and parcel or son. He is the Supreme Leader, and we are subordinates. He is the Supreme Maintainer, and we are completely dependent on Him.
Whatever we possess, including our body and our self, everything, belongs to Him. When one is completely in sense of this fact—he is God Conscious. And unless a living entity becomes God Conscious, he cannot be happy. So this is our propaganda. There is no question of sectarianism. Every religion should have this aim in view. But the system of religion that teaches development of God Consciousness is first class. We have to estimate by the result, and not by the formalities. So this movement, Krishna Consciousness, very quickly develops this God Consciousness, and it is very easy to adopt it.
But, at the same time, we must remember that a sinful man cannot develop God Consciousness. The four pillars of sinful life are: 1) illicit sex, 2) animal killing or animal eating, 3) indulgence in intoxication in any form, and 4) take to the life of gambling. We therefore request all religious institutions to check their followers from the reactions of these four principles of sinful life. That will pave the way of developing God Consciousness, and thus all the people will be happy.
It is not a question of following this religion or that religion. It is a question of philosophy of life. Our Krishna Consciousness philosophy is practical, easier, and based on sound reasoning and philosophy. We place it before impartial, thoughtful men of the world, and we are certain that they will find it sublime.
I wish that you American boys should live elegantly to the tradition of your great country. But at the same time you shall preach the Sankirtana movement, becoming humbler than the grass and more tolerant than the tree as instructed by Lord Caitanya.

COMMENT
The teachings and philosophy of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu as taught by Srila Prabhupada are non-sectarian and comprehensive. These two aspects of the Krsna Conscious religion, 1) it is a complete philosophy and 2) it is inclusive to others, are what initially attracted me to begin the study and practice of Krsna Consciousness. It is also the reason that I have continued to practice Krsna Consciousness for 37 years.
The Krsna Conscious philosophy is comprehensive. Its scope is very broad; it includes the extremes of all philosophy. In the verse of SB 1.2.11, we find the extremes of God realization that are possible.
“Learned transcendentalists who know the Absolute Truth call this non-dual substance Brahman, Paramätmä or Bhagavän.”
Acintya abeda beda, inconceivably it says, the individual soul, the jiva, is simultaneously one with and different from God. We are God but not God. God is one, but yet can remain a separate unlimited supreme person.
If the jiva is in fact God, then how could the jiva ever be overcome by illusion? How can God ever forget He is God? The monists have no reasonable answer to this question, but the Vaishnavas do.
In the Upanishad it is said, “God is eternal and the individual jiva soul is eternal. God is conscious and the jiva is also conscious. The difference between the 2 eternals is that the many jivas are forever dependent upon the one source, God, for their existence.” Although the jiva is one in quality with God, the jiva is not one in quantity and thus can fall under the cloud of illusion. Clouds can never cover the sun, but clouds can block the separated sunrays.
Krsna consciousness is the essence of religion and doesn’t discriminate between the varieties of religion. In SB 1.2.6, we find the religious gold standard succinctly explained.
“The supreme occupation [dharma] for all humanity is that by which men can attain to loving devotional service unto the transcendent Lord. Such devotional service must be unmotivated and uninterrupted to completely satisfy the self.”
Krsna Consciousness is non-sectarian. It simply says gold is gold. There is only one God, one source and religion means to surrender to that source without personal motives and without interruption. To the degree a religion teaches its followers to love God; to that degree it is a bona fide religion. If a religion does not practice or teach surrender to the one God, then it is a religion in name only; there is really no gold in it!

宗派という問題はない

親愛なるアチュータナンダ、
私の祝福を受けてください。１９７０年３月１０日付けの手紙を受け取りました。
記者会見があったそうですが、また将来そのような事があった場合、クリシュナ意識運動を明確に理解してもらうよう次の点を覚えておくといいでしょう。
動物社会と人間社会の違いは、人間社会には何らかの形で、クリシュナ意識あるいは神の意識があること。それは宗教です。神の意識のない宗教には意味がありません。神の意識は、永遠に神とのつながりがあるという事を意味します。神は父で、我々は神の一部であり、子供です。神は最高のリーダーで、我々は神に従う者です。神は最高の維持者であり、私達は完全に神に頼っています。
自分の肉体、自分自身、をも含めた所有物のすべては神に属しています。この事実を完全に知る者が神の意識であると言えます。生命体は神の意識にならなければ幸せになる事はできません。これが我々の言おうとしている事です。宗派的な問題等あり得ません。すべての宗教にこのような見解があるべきです。神の意識を高めることを教える宗教のシステムは第一級のものと言えます。形ではなく結果を見なければいけません。このクリシュナ意識は、神の意識を素早く高め、また、簡単にできる方法です。
しかし、同時に、罪深い人は神の意識を高める事はできない事も覚えておかねばなりません。罪深い生活の４つの支柱は、１）婚外の性交渉 ２）動物の殺生あるいは肉食 ３）陶酔物をとる事 ４）賭け事をする事 です。ですから、この４つの罪深い行動の反動を受けないよう、すべての宗教にそれに従う人々がそれを辞めるようお願いしているのです。そうする事が、神の意識の発展への道を形造っていき、みんなが幸せになる事ができるのです。
この宗教に従う、あの宗教に従うという事ではありません。人生の哲学の問題です。我々のクリシュナ意識の哲学は、実践的で、簡単、健全な論理と哲学にもとずいています。世界中の公平で、思慮深い人々にそれを提示すれば、きっとその崇高さを分かってもらえると思います。
あなた方アメリカ人の青年達が素晴らしい国の伝統を受け立派に暮らす事を願っています。でも同時に、主チャイタンニャが教えたように草よりも腰を低くし、木々よりも我慢強く、サンキルタナ運動を説いてください。

解説
シュリーラ・プラブパ−ダが教えてくださった主チャイタンニャ・マハプラブーの教えと哲学は、宗派には関係なく、分かりやすいものです。クリシュナ意識の宗教の２つの見解、すなわち１）完全な哲学である。２）他のものをすべてふくんでいる。この事が、最初に私がクリシュナ意識に魅かれ、それを学び、やってみようと思った事です。そして。３７年間クリシュナ意識を続けてきた理由でもあります。
クリシュナ意識の哲学は、分かりやすい。範囲が広い。あらゆる哲学の極限をもふくんでいる。シュリーマッド・バーガウ゛ァタム１・２・１１の中では神の悟りの極限を見る事ができます。
“絶対真理に通じた学識ある超越主義者は、この二元性のない真理をブラフマン、パラマトマ、バーガヴァンと呼ぶ。”
アチンティア・ベーダ・ベーダ とは個々の魂であるジーウ゛ァは、同時に神と一つでもあり異なってもいることを想像を絶して言っています。私達は神であり神ではないのです。神は一人でもあり、また別々の無限の最高人格者でもあります。
もしジーウ゛ァが本当に神であるのなら、なぜ幻想に負けてしまうのでしょうか？神が神である事をなぜ忘れてしまうのでしょうか？一元論者はこれに答える事はできませんが、ウ゛ァイシュナウ゛ァはできます。
“神は永遠であり、個々のジーウ゛ァ魂も永遠である。神は意識であり、ジーウ゛ァも意識である。その二つの永遠なものの違いは、ジーウ゛ァの多くは永久に一つの源である神に依存して維持されているという事である。”とウパニシャッドは言っています。ジーウ゛ァは神とは質的には同じですが、量的には同じではなく、幻想という雲の下に落ちてしまう事もあります。雲は太陽を覆ってしまう事はできませんが、別々の太陽光線を遮る事はできます。
クリシュナ意識は宗教の真髄であり、様々な宗教を分け隔てしません。シュリーマッド・バーガウ゛ァタム １・２・６では宗教の黄金原則が簡潔に説明されています。
“すべての人類の最高の仕事（ダルマ）は、それによって超越的な主への愛の献愛奉仕を得るものである。そのような献愛奉仕は、物欲も、遮るものもあってはならず、それによって完全に自分が満たされる。”
クリシュナ意識は一つの宗派ではありません。金は金であると言っているだけです。一人の神、一つの根源しかなく、宗教とは、個人的な動機や妨げなくその一つの根源に身を委ねる事です。ある点までは宗教というものはそれに従う人々に神の愛を教えています。その地点までは権威ある宗教と言えるでしょう。もし宗教が一つの神に身を委ねる事を教えなければ、それは名前だけの宗教です。そこに金を見つける事はできないでしょう。

Wanting to become Krsna Conscious

“Wanting to become Krishna Conscious is also as good as being in a state of Krishna Consciousness.”
Your question about not chanting while attending class is also welcome. I don't mind if you do not chant Hare Krishna Mantra, but if you kindly sit down while chanting is going on, and if you simply hear with attention, that will also act. Wanting to become Krishna Conscious is also as good as being in a state of Krishna Consciousness. There is no actual difference, but the difference is only just like the difference between green mangos and fully ripened mangos. The ripened mango is not a separate mango, but it is another condition of the green mango. So if the green mango is properly taken care of, it will surely come to the stage of the ripened mango. Therefore, as a mango, there is no difference between the two stages. So far as your dress is concerned, that is immaterial. But as a soldier you know that every soldier has got a uniform dress according to the army etiquette of regulation. Therefore, the army of Krishna Consciousness must have at least the tilak on the forehead in all conditions. For your business you can wear your naval service uniform; similarly, if you have tilak on your forehead as a soldier of Krishna Consciousness, you may not have so much objection, because it is essential. Your ideas are great, and your efficiency is laudable. The best thing would have been if you could come here and live with me at least for a week. We could have discussed it very nicely, so in the future you can become a great commander of the Krishna Consciousness soldiers.I hope this will meet you in good health.Your ever well-wisher,A.C. COMMENT
In this letter we find Prabhupada’s words to be full of encouragement and practical suggestions for becoming Krsna conscious. We may feel at times that we can never become pure devotees of Krsna. We think we are so impure. Our consciousness is forever captured by the glitter of Maya. We have no attraction for the Lord’s holy name, even after chanting for many years.
But Prabhupada points out that wanting to be Krsna conscious is the same as being Krsna conscious, just like a green mango is mango although it isn’t sweet yet. The important thing is to protect the mango or our desire to become Krsna conscious so that it will continue to mature until it is ripe.
With enthusiasm, patients and confidence we must continue to chant the holy name in the association of devotees. If we are confident in the result we can patiently await for its arrival. Mind is very powerful in this respect.
If we believe we can become Krsna conscious this give our mind an instruction to make it happen. What we focus on increases, if you only have 5 dollar in your pocket, be grateful for that & you’ll get more. If you are only Krsna conscious for 30 seconds a day, be grateful and it will increase.
Remember, we have to 1) take responsibility for what we are creating, that is, acknowledge that whatever is going on, it is created by what we do inside our head 2) acknowledge that we do have a choice in what we do inside, and 3) exercise that choice.
As soon as we notice our attention has drifted towards Maya (illusion), what we don’t want, are afraid of, or what we want to avoid, then we can choose to return our focus on what we do want which is to be with Krsna. We can put our fate in Krsna’s able hands. By faithfully chanting the Lord’s holy name, we will progress on the path to Krsna.
“To those who are constantly devoted to Me with love, I give the understanding by which they can come to me.” BG 10.10

クラスにはでないけれど唱名をするという事についてですがそれは良いと思います。またマントラを唱えなくても、他の人が唱名している時に静かに座って、集中して聞く事ができればそれでも大丈夫です。クリシュナ意識になりたいという思いは、クリシュナ意識である状態と同じように良いものです。その二つには何ら変りはありませんが、強いて言えば、完熟したマンゴーと未熟なマンゴーの様なものです。完熟したマンゴーは別のマンゴーではありませんが、単に青いマンゴーの別の状態です。ですから青いマンゴーをきちんと管理すれば、間違いなくマンゴーは完熟します。ですからマンゴーとしては、この二つのマンゴーの段階には何の違いもありません。
あなたが何を着るかということは重要な事ではありません。でも、兵士は、兵士としての規則の儀礼に従い、すべての兵士がユニフォームを着ています。ですから、クリシュナ意識の兵士はどんな状況下でも、少なくとも額にティーラックを付けなければいけません。仕事ではあなたも海兵隊のユニフォームを着ますよね。同じように、クリシュナ意識の兵士として、額にティーラックを付けてもあまり問題はないと思います。それは大切な事ですから。

My Dear Ann Clifford,
Please accept my blessings. I am in due receipt of your letter dated July 25, 1969, and I have noted the contents carefully. I am pleased to learn that you have become interested in Krishna Consciousness through living at the Krishna House in Montreal and associating with the devotees there. Your return address is not at this Krishna House, and I hope that you are attending the Kirtanas which are held at the temple on Monday, Wednesday and Friday evenings. The chanting of Hare Krishna Mantra will clear away all of the difficulties that you have mentioned. Actually, as pure spirit soul, there is no difficulty; the cause of all problems is that we are forgetful of the fact that we are part and parcel of Krishna, and we are trying to enjoy the material nature through these material bodies. But the laws of material nature are so stringent that in spite of all attempts for enjoyment, the living entity in the material world must always come to the platform of suffering. This chanting of the Hare Krishna Mantra is especially recommended for chanting in this age of Kali yuga so that any sincere soul who takes to it will very soon regain his memory of being the transcendental loving servitor of the Lord, or Krishna. So if you will come to our temple on Park Avenue and chant and speak with the devotees as far as possible, you will find that all lesser attachments and lesser enjoyments will fall very short of your attachment for and attraction for service of the Lord in Krishna Consciousness. That is a fact, and my special request to you is that you seriously read our literature, especially Bhagavad-gita As It Is, chant Hare Krishna always; then you will find your life becoming sublime.
Regarding your question about why we do not eat meat and yet we eat plant life, the answer is that we do everything as Krishna recommends. Everything we eat is first offered to Lord Krishna, and because Krishna does not eat meat, therefore we also do not eat meat. The fruits, grains, and vegetables which we offer to the Lord are not caused any suffering by our offering them to Krishna. Rather they are greatly benefited because to be offered for the pleasure of the Lord will grant for the living entity within the plant body certain liberation in the near future. Everything that we do in Krishna Consciousness is ultimately beneficial to all living creatures because we are working under the recommendations of the Lord Himself who is the well-wisher of all His part and parcel children. I hope this will sufficiently clear up this matter for you.I hope this will meet you in good health.

Ann Clifford’s question to Srila Prabhupada is a very common question and a very justified one. Srila Prabhupada’s answer is simple but profound.
It has been demonstrated in laboratory research that plants have measurable electrical reaction to human beings thoughts when hooked up to electrodes. If a human in the room thinks kind thoughts about the plants, electrical changes can be detected. Similar reactions can be detected when humans are thinking negative or aggressive thoughts toward the plant. Some level of conscious awareness can be observed in plants through such kind of experimentation.
It has also been demonstrated that plants thrive when classical music is played for them and conversely wither away when hard rock is played continually.
We may not be able to say with any certainty that plants feel fear or pain, or to the degree that sentient beings such as animal and human do. However, life is synonymous with consciousness.
Evolved souls demonstrate compassion for all living beings. A devotee is prepared to offer all respects to all living beings, even to an ant. Why, we may ask? An evolved being is able to understand another’s pain as his own suffering.
“He is a perfect yogi who, by comparison to his own self, sees the true equality of all beings, in both their happiness and their distress, O Arjuna!” BG 6.32
It is the nature of this world that one living being is food for another. Killing is unavoidable. Yet, an evolved being is careful to avoid causing pain unnecessarily to any other living being, be they an animal, human or plant.
In 1971 Prabhupada visited San Francisco to attend the Rathayatra festival. The his disciples rented a house for Srila Prabhupada to stay in. The house was over grown with tall grass and other weeds. Prabhupada was relaxing in the garden at the time when a disciple asked Srila Prabhupada if he could mow the lawn and pull the weeds in order to beautify the scene for Prabhupada’s pleasure. Srila Prabhupada asked the devotee not to disturb his friends (the grass and other living creators) and so this devotee desisted from cutting the lawn. Jayananda Prabhu told this story to me shortly after the incident occurred.
Elephants are also vegetarian. Being vegetarian is not necessarily a spiritual qualification. One who is spiritually qualified recognizes that the Lord is the supreme enjoyer, proprietor and friend of all. Out of love and gratitude, God’s servant offers everything back to the Lord for the Lord’s pleasure. In this way, the Lord is satisfied and all beings in krsna’s creation receive the highest benefit. Even plants offered to the Lord will receive liberation in the very near future. The Krsna Conscious life style is so positively wonderful and exciting! Jaya Srila Prabhupada!

１９７１年、ラタヤトラ祭に出るためにプラブパーダはサンフランシスコを訪れました。弟子達はプラブパーダが滞在するための家を借りました。家の庭には背の高い草や雑草が生い茂っていました。プラブパーダが庭でリラックスしている時に、もっと庭を楽しむ事ができるように、芝生を刈って、雑草を抜きましょうかと弟子の一人が尋ねました。弟子はプラブパーダに、自分の友達（草や雑草）の邪魔をしないようにと言われ、芝刈りを思いとどまりました。この話はジャヤナンダ・プラブーが後に私に話してくれたものです。

Why is it acceptable kill plants and not animals?

My Dear Ann Clifford,
Please accept my blessings. I am in due receipt of your letter dated July 25, 1969, and I have noted the contents carefully. I am pleased to learn that you have become interested in Krishna Consciousness through living at the Krishna House in Montreal and associating with the devotees there. Your return address is not at this Krishna House, and I hope that you are attending the Kirtanas which are held at the temple on Monday, Wednesday and Friday evenings. The chanting of Hare Krishna Mantra will clear away all of the difficulties that you have mentioned. Actually, as pure spirit soul, there is no difficulty; the cause of all problems is that we are forgetful of the fact that we are part and parcel of Krishna, and we are trying to enjoy the material nature through these material bodies. But the laws of material nature are so stringent that in spite of all attempts for enjoyment, the living entity in the material world must always come to the platform of suffering. This chanting of the Hare Krishna Mantra is especially recommended for chanting in this age of Kali yuga so that any sincere soul who takes to it will very soon regain his memory of being the transcendental loving servitor of the Lord, or Krishna. So if you will come to our temple on Park Avenue and chant and speak with the devotees as far as possible, you will find that all lesser attachments and lesser enjoyments will fall very short of your attachment for and attraction for service of the Lord in Krishna Consciousness. That is a fact, and my special request to you is that you seriously read our literature, especially Bhagavad-gita As It Is, chant Hare Krishna always; then you will find your life becoming sublime.
Regarding your question about why we do not eat meat and yet we eat plant life, the answer is that we do everything as Krishna recommends. Everything we eat is first offered to Lord Krishna, and because Krishna does not eat meat, therefore we also do not eat meat. The fruits, grains, and vegetables which we offer to the Lord are not caused any suffering by our offering them to Krishna. Rather they are greatly benefited because to be offered for the pleasure of the Lord will grant for the living entity within the plant body certain liberation in the near future. Everything that we do in Krishna Consciousness is ultimately beneficial to all living creatures because we are working under the recommendations of the Lord Himself who is the well-wisher of all His part and parcel children. I hope this will sufficiently clear up this matter for you.I hope this will meet you in good health.
